Medical:

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) maintains a Provider Credential Search on their website and some Spokane physicians have had actions taken against them. Only complaints that led to an action are shown on Provider Credential Search. However, since all complaints about health care professionals are public information - even those that have not been found to be violations of law and, for that reason, would not be noted in a Credentials search - you can also contact the DOH Customer Service Center at 360-236-4700 to request further information. More information about Provider Credential Searches is available in their Frequently Asked Questions document.

Further information about choosing a medical provider is available on our State Links page.

Education:

The list of schools, colleges and universities in the Spokane area is extensive but what we most often encounter at SERC is students and families who are experiencing difficulties with IEPs (Individualized Educational Programs) in K-12 schools or reasonable accomodation in colleges and universiites.

In our experience, the most effective approach to dealing with disability related difficulities in education is three-fold. First, learn your rights and the school's responsibiltiies. Second, document, document, document - either in writing or, where possible (and legal) on tape. This includes keeping notes about what happened at meetings, about who you called and when, and about what you have been told and by whom. Third, find out the "chain of command." In the K-12 system and relative to IEP's, a good reference to learn your rights and the school's responsibility can be found in the article YOUR CHILD'S IEP: Practical and Legal Guidance for Parents but there are others on the Internet, as well as the personal stories of others who have experienced similar problems. In addition to documenting events and conversations, if you are experiencing difficulties and don't believe they are being adequately addressed, put your complaints and concerns in written letters so that, as you continue to address them up the "chain of command" you have legal evidence of your attempts to resolve the issue(s).
