Medications (AEDs)

Few new anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) prior to 1997.
Possible side effects include:

Diziness, drowsiness or sedation
Fatigue, weakness, difficulties with balance
Hyperactivity and other behavioral difficulties
Learning difficulties and cognitive impairment
Headaches and abdominal pain
Appetite - increase or decrease; weight gain or loss
Life threatening blood count and liver enzyme dysfunction
Skin rashes - sometimes severe or fatal
Some medications for one kind of seizure worsen others
Many of these concerns more serious for children under 3
